侵入種植物の販売を促進しないよう　大臣が呼びかけ

　　イギリスのブラッドショー自然保護大臣は、5月26日、チェルシー花の展示会の「雑草大支配」
スタンド訪問の際、園芸センターやガーデンニング関係のテレビ番組に対し、
イギリスの景観を脅かす侵入種植物の販売を促進しないよう強く呼びかけた。
　日本産イタドリ、ヒマラヤ・ホウセンカ、オオフサモなどの侵入種植物によって、
イギリスの多くの地域が荒らされている。イギリスの固有種でない、こうした侵入種の植物が、
未だに園芸センターで販売され、テレビでも取り上げられており、一般市民は、
イギリスの生物多様性を脅かす侵入種植物を買うよう促されている　と大臣は述べる。
　自然の中で、侵入種植物を植えたり、また、侵入種植物が育つようにすることは違法行為となる。
イギリス環境・食糧・地方事業省は、園芸業界の代表と協力して、業界の自主規制を作成中である。同大臣は、
このまま、侵入種植物の取引が促進されるのであれば、一部の種の輸入禁止措置や販売禁止措置を止めるわけにはいかない　と述べた。

　Nature Conservation Minister, Ben Bradshaw, today called on garden centres and gardening
programmes to stop promoting non-native invasive plants that are threatening Britain's landscape.
　Visiting the "Weeds of Mass Domination" stand at the Chelsea Flower Show, Mr Bradshaw witnessed
the devastation being caused by plants like Japanese knotweed, Himalayan balsam, Spanish blue bells
and Parrot's Feather in many parts of Britain.
　"The public are still being encouraged to buy plants that are disastrous for our biodiversity,
" the Minister said. At the stand, run by the Cornwall Knotweed Forum, Mr Bradshaw was shown
evidence of non-native invasive species still being sold by garden centres and promoted on TV.
"I cannot believe this is still going on" Mr Bradshaw said.
　When plants are grown away from their natural habitat the checks and balances that nature provides
can be missing, enabling them to grow uncontrolled. If they are not caught in time they can threaten
native species and transform ecosystems.
　The Forum's stand has a display showing a corn field 200 years ago with its indigenous meadow, pond
and marsh plants next to the same plot today following the dumping of garden waste that rooted
and has now overpowered the previous planting. The 1804/2004 theme reflects the bi-centenary
celebrations of the Royal Horticultural Society at this year's Chelsea Flower Show.
　It is illegal to plant or cause some non-native invasive plants to grow in the wild. Defra is currently
working with representatives of the horticultural sector to draw up a voluntary code of practice
for the industry. But the Minister said he would not rule out import and sales bans of some species
if they continued to be traded.
